Coming July 6th: Joseph Sohm's Visions of America

The Ridgway Chautauqua Society and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild present award-winning Joseph Sohm’s "Visions of America", a multi-media portrait of the American story. The show starts at 7 pm.

Sohm, whose photographs have been published throughout the world, created Visions of America to answer the question, “How do you photograph Democracy?” Drawing upon his Gold Medal-winning tabletop book, he escorts audiences on a 50-state journey to capture the essence of democracy in daily life. In addition to Sohm’s keynote talk, the event includes an HD-Blue Ray video production, with original music, of his iconic images. The voice of actor/director Clint Eastwood narrates the visual story of Sohm’s three-decade quest.

Sohm’s discerning lens explores subjects such as Main Street, Native America, African Americans, farms, cities, sports, military, transportation, environment, presidents, homeless people, landscapes, history, and 50 state capitols. “My portrait of America is not Norman Rockwell’s,” he told PBS Newshour, but rather a nonpartisan mosaic of many images that together capture the country’s rich diversity.

Joseph Sohm is an American history teacher turned photo historian, public speaker and author. His images have appeared in publications such as National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, and The New York Times, and on CNN, ABC, PBS, and The History Channel. His photographs are featured in President Clinton’s My Life and in his Presidential Library. Sohm’s work also is featured in President Reagan’s book, The Great Communicator, Bill Mahr’s, Real Time, and in Al Gore’s Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth. His work was recently featured at the NEWSEUM in Washington D.C. Sohm is represented by Getty Images & Corbis.

Sohm’s book, Visions of America – Photographing Democracy, will be for sale at the event and he will sign copies. The book won the 2009 Gold Medal award of the Independent Publisher Book Awards and includes a foreword by Paul Theroux. A new edition of the book was recently released by Readers Digest.

Admission is a $10 donation. Joseph Sohm will conduct a follow-up Photographer’s Workshop Monday, July 8 at the Sherbino Theater 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. For details, visit:

Award Winning Master Photographer Joseph Sohm Shares Pro Photo Tricks, July 8th

The Ridgway Chautauqua Society and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild are hosting a Photographer’s Workshop with Visions of America photographer Joseph Sohm on Monday July 8, 10 am to 4 pm, at the Sherbino Theater in downtown Ridgway.

“Photo-chameleon” Sohm has mastered many photographic-styles while shooting his 50-state portrait of America, including: landscapes, people, events, sports, presidential campaigns, cityscapes, aerials, icons, travel and “street-photography. Whether film or digital, this 6-hour workshop covers photo-essentials, including proper use of lenses, tripods, polarizer, aperture vs. shutter priority, natural lighting, depth of field, night-shooting, framing, shooting wide and overriding auto settings. He discusses visual composition and juxtapositions that make images compelling. Joseph’s photographic success depends upon travel timing and location scouting. Thus he’ll discuss how to anticipate photo ops, so that the Photo-Gods of lighting, location and weather are your friend. While he’ll cover both film and digital (shooting RAW), the emphasis is on photo-fundamentals and not on Photoshop. While he will cover aspects of licensing (selling) his images, the focus is on SYNTHESIZING your skills, talents, and personal interests to create compelling images. While Sohm will show relevant HD music videos of his work, the emphasis will is on the photographers work. All ages are invited.

The workshop is July 8, 2013 at the Sherbino Theater, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Price is $135 ($80 for students 18 years of age and younger) and includes Joseph Sohm’s book, “Pan America” which features panoramic images from across the 50 states. Contact Pat Willits at 970-626-3236 for reservations.

Bio and information on master photographer Sohm can be found on his website:

About

Great communities have great community resources. The Ridgway Chautauqua Society is a community-based 501(c)3 focused on fulfilling Ridgway’s vision of creating an ecologically responsible community where learning, creativity and culture are at its core. And at the heart of that vision lies the Sherbino Theater.

The success of the Sherbino Theater depends upon the generosity of our financial supporters. We wish to thank attorneys Irwin Borof and Scott Williams for their pro-bono assistance helping the Ridgway Chautauqua Society receive its 501(c)3 status. This is a significant step forward for the Society and the Sherbino Theater–it provides donors of goods and services the opportunity to qualify for a federal income tax deduction and a Colorado Enterprise Zone tax credit. Please contact us if you’d like to learn more.
